Secretary of Public Welfare Gary Alexander has resigned and announced his last day will be February 15. The secretary said he is leaving the position to explore other opportunities and to be closer to his family, who lives in Rhode Island.
Bev Mackereth, who has served as the department’s deputy secretary for the Office of Children, Youth and Families since November 2011, will serve as acting secretary. Mackereth is a former state representative from Spring Grove, York County.
